Readiness Code, Generating

Special tools and workshop equipment required







- Engine speed adjuster V.A.G 1788/10 (if a high speed (as specified in test step) cannot be set with adjuster, simultaneously floor accelerator and brake pedals)

Requirements
- Vehicle stationary
- Vehicles with automatic transmission: Selector lever set to P or N
- Electrical loads switched off (coolant fan must not run during test)
- Air conditioner switched off
- Coolant temperature at least 80 degree C, see Display group 004, display zone 3.
Important: Warm up engine by performing test drive if possible.

NOTE: If when performing an operation the test result "OK" is displayed immediately after selection of a display group, the test has already been completed and work can be continued with the next step.

Step 1: Interrogating fault memory

Condition
- Engine stopped, ignition on
- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 and select vehicle system "01 - Engine electronics" from list. Ignition must be on. Connecting VAS 5051 Scan Tool

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- From list -1- select diagnostic function "02 - Interrogating fault memory".

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Content of fault memory:
- 0 faults detected
or
- X faults detected
2 Fault
- Fault code
- Fault location
- Type of fault

If a fault has been stored:
- Eliminate fault, erase fault memory. Perform test drive and interrogate fault memory again as a check.

If no fault has been stored:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 2: Erasing fault memory

Condition
- Engine stopped, ignition on

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- From list -1- select diagnostic function "05 - Erasing fault memory".

NOTE: On erasing the fault memory, the readiness code is reset and therefore must be regenerated.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 No display (prior to erasing)
or
- Fault memory erased
2 NOTE: Is function to be implemented? NOTE: Data will be erased
- Touch "OK" key on display -2-.
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 3: Adapting throttle valve control module to engine control module

Condition
- Engine stopped, ignition on

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- From list -1- select diagnostic function "04 - Basic setting".

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "060" for "Display group number 060" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zones -3- and -4-.


Display Group 060:






Note on display zone 3:
During adaptation, various values appear in display zone 3 as an indication of the corresponding adaptation status. The behavior of the adaptation step counter (display zone 3) during adaptation is not the decisive factor, but rather that the specification "ADP OK" appears in display zone 4 on completion of adaptation.

If specification "ADP OK" is obtained:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 4: Adaptation of kickdown function

Condition
- Engine stopped, ignition on

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "063" for "Display group number 063" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

NOTE: User is then prompted to "Actuate kickdown".

- Floor accelerator pedal beyond kickdown point and keep it pressed.

NOTE: "Kickdown ADP. in progress" is displayed during adaptation of kickdown point. "Kickdown ADP. OK" appears following successful adaptation of kickdown point.

- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 063:






Note on display zone 4:
"ERROR" may be displayed, for example, if, following the tester prompt, the accelerator pedal is not floored immediately or if the accelerator pedal is released with adaptation already in progress but not yet completed. In both cases exit from "Basic setting" mode and perform adaptation again.

If specification "ADP OK" is obtained:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 5: Diagnosis of EVAP canister purge regulator valve

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "070" for "Display group number 070" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 070:






If specification "TBV OK" is obtained:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 6: Diagnosis of tank leak test

NOTE: This diagnosis is locked the first 230 seconds from the time the engine is started.

Condition
- Engine idling
- Engine coolant temperature greater than 85 degree C
- Intake air temperature lower than 85 degree C
- Fuel tank filler cap opened briefly to release pressure.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "071" for "Display group number 071" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zone -4-.

NOTE:
- Test duration for the tank leak test takes approximately 90 seconds.
- Should the diagnosis be repeated several times, open the fuel filler cap each time to release pressure in the tank.


Display Group 071:






If specification "TEV OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 7: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor control system

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "037" for "Display group number 037" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 037:






If specification "Syst. OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "038" for "Display group number 038" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 038:






If specification "Syst. OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 8: Diagnosis of aging of oxygen sensors upstream of catalytic converter

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "034" for "Display group number 034" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Display in zone 2 must be greater than 250 degree C then
- Engine idling

- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 034:






If specification "B1-S1 OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "035" for "Display group number 035" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Display in zone 2 must be greater than 250 degree C then
- Engine idling
- Check display in zone -4-.

"B2-S1 OK" may also be displayed immediately. Then continue with the next test step. This also applies to all further test steps.


Display Group 035:






If specification "B2-P1 OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 9: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor interchange after catalytic converter

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "039" for "Display group number 039" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Accelerator and brake pedals depressed simultaneously (engine will run at 1800 RPM)
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 039:






If specification "Syst. OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 10: Checking oxygen sensor heating

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "041" for "Display group number 041" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zones -1- and -3-.

NOTE: Specifications can be obtained faster by increasing the engine speed (accelerating).


Display Group 41:






- Touch <- key.

NOTE: Heating of cylinder bank 2 oxygen sensors is then checked.

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "042" for "Display group number 042" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zones -1- and -3-.

NOTE: Specifications can be obtained faster by increasing the engine speed (accelerating).


Display Group 42:






Important notes on display groups 41 and 42 - display zones 1 and 3:
- Display zones 1 and 3 remain blank until oxygen sensors reach operating temperature (increase engine speed to attain specifications).
- Once the two oxygen sensors have reached their operating temperature, display zones 1 and 3 must indicate a resistance less than 0.9 k Ohm.
- Do not continue with testing until resistance less than 0.9 k Ohm is indicated in display zones 1 and 3.
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 11: Diagnosis of oxygen sensor aging after catalytic converter

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "043" for "Display group number 043" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 043:






If specification "B1-S2 OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.

Condition
- Engine idling

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "044" for "Display group number 044" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 044:






If specification "B2-P2 OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.
- Proceed with next step.

Step 12: Diagnosis of secondary air system

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "077" for "Display group number 077" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Accelerator and brake pedals depressed simultaneously (engine will run at 2550 RPM)
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 077:






If specification "Syst. OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "078" for "Display group number 078" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Accelerator and brake pedals depressed simultaneously (engine will run at 2550 RPM)
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 078:






If specification "Syst. OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Release accelerator and brake pedals.
- Touch <- key, proceed with next step.

Step 13: Diagnosis of catalytic converters

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "046" for "Display group number 046" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Accelerator and brake pedals depressed simultaneously (engine will run at 1800 RPM)
- Check display in zone -4-.

NOTE: The diagnosis time amounts to approx. 40 seconds.


Display Group 046:






If specification "CAT B1 OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







1 Enter display group
- Use keypad -2- to enter "047" for "Display group number 047" and confirm by touching Q key.

Indicated on VAS 5051:







- Activate basic setting by touching key -A-.

Condition
- Accelerator and brake pedals depressed simultaneously (engine will run at 1800 RPM)
- Check display in zone -4-.


Display Group 047:






If specification "CAT B2 OK" is obtained in display zone 4:
- Touch <- key.

Step 14: Reading readiness code

- Read out readiness code again (as a check) Readiness Code Reading
