Left Timing Chain Cover






Left Timing Chain Cover

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Gearbox Support (T10337)

Engine Support Bridge (T40150)

Hand drill with plastic brush attachment

Protective eyewear

Sealant.

Removing

During installation, all cable ties must be re-installed at the same location.

- Install protective body covers. Refer to => [ Protective Body Covers, Installing ] Protective Body Covers, Installing.

- Remove the left - 1 - and right - 3 - engine compartment trim.





- Remove the engine cover - 2 -.

- Bring the rear lid into the service position.





- Drain the coolant in the engine. Refer to => [ Cooling System, Draining and Filling ] Procedures.

- Remove engine bracket left and right bolts - arrows -.





- Remove the left and right rear wheels.

- Remove the left and right rear wheel housing liners.





- Remove the rear bumper cover.





- Remove intake manifold.





- Remove the secondary air injection pump. Refer to => [ Secondary Air Injection Pump ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the rear coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Rear Coolant Pipe ] Rear Coolant Pipe.

- Remove the left secondary air injection combination valve. Refer to => [ Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve.

- Remove the left transmission mount nut - 1 - while counterholding with an open-end wrench - 2 -.





CAUTION!
Risk of accident.

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) may only be used during assembly and not stand unsupervised under vehicle.

- Raise the transmission slightly with the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and Transmission Support (T10337).





- Place a wood block - 1 - between the crossmember and transmission housing as shown in the illustration.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the left transmission support.





- Slowly lower the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and move it aside.

- Loosen the clamp - 1 - on the left exhaust system tract, tilt it outward with the spring element - arrow - and remove the clamp.





- Remove the bolt on the left catalytic converter bracket - 1 -.





The bolt - 1 - can be accessed from the wheel housing side out.

Ignore - 2 -.

- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the heat shield - 1 -.





- Remove nuts - 6 through 1 -.





The exhaust manifold with catalytic converter remains in installation position.

- Install the Engine Support Bridge (T40150) parts as illustrated, placing the left Support (T40150/1) and right Support (T40150/2) on the body braces.





The tab on the (T40150/1) and (T40150/2) must be inserted in the body brace - arrow 1 -.

The retainer on the side of the (T40150/1) and (T40150/2) must lie on the body brace - arrow 2 -.

The Connector (T40150/5) bolts must engage in the holes in the Square Tube (T40150/3) and be installed completely.

- Engage the Spindle Carabiner Hooks (T40150/6) on the front engine lifting eyes.

- Raise the engine-transmission assembly with the spindles until the bottom side of the oil pan - arrow B - is level with the top side of the crossmember - arrow A -.





- Press the engine-transmission assembly forward and to the right slightly.

- Remove the exhaust manifold with catalytic converter from the cylinder head and lay aside.

- Remove the bolts - 1 through 8 - and then carefully remove the left cover for the timing chain from the bond.





Installing

Tightening specifications. Refer to => [ Left Timing Chain Cover, Tightening Specifications
And Sequence ] Timing Chain Covers Assembly Overview.

Replace the M6 bolts and O-rings.

Secure all hose connections with hose clamps appropriate for the model.

CAUTION!
Risk of eye injury.

Wear safety glasses.

CAUTION!
Risk of contaminating lubricating system.

Cover open parts of engine.

- Remove the remaining sealant on the left timing chain and cylinder head covers, e.g, with a rotating plastic brush.





- Clean sealing surfaces, must be free of oil and grease.

Note the expiration date of the sealing compound.

- Cut tube nozzle at front marking (jet dia. approximately 2 mm).





- Drive the left coolant intermediate pipe - 2 - out of the left timing chain cover with a drift.





- Replace the O-rings - 1 - on the coolant intermediate pipe - 2 -.

- Insert the coolant intermediate pipe into the left timing chain cover.

CAUTION!
The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.

Do not apply sealant bead thicker than specified.

- Apply a sealant bead - arrow - to the clean sealing surface of the timing chain left cover as shown in the illustration.

Thickness of sealant bead: 2.5 mm.

The timing chain cover must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the sealant

- Position the left timing chain cover and tighten the bolts. Refer to => [ Left Timing Chain Cover, Tightening Specifications

The rest of the installation is in reverse order of removal, note the following:

- Install the left exhaust manifold with catalytic converter. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold with Catalytic Converter ] Left Exhaust Manifold With Catalytic Converter.

- Install engine bracket. Refer to => [ Subframe Mount Assembly Overview ] Subframe Mount Assembly Overview.

- Install the transmission mount.

- Install the left secondary air injection combination valve. Refer to => [ Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve ] Secondary Air Injection Left Combination Valve.

- Install the rear coolant pipes. Refer to => [ Rear Coolant Pipe ] Rear Coolant Pipe.

- Install the engine compartment crossmember. Refer to => [ Engine Compartment Crossmember ] Engine Assembly.

- Install secondary air injection (AIR) pump. Refer to => [ Secondary Air Injection Pump ] Service and Repair.

- Install intake manifold.

- Install the rear bumper cover.

- Install the engine compartment trim.

- Install the rear wheel housing liners.

- Mount the rear wheels.

- Fill with coolant => [ Filling ] Procedures.
