Selector Lever Cable
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200)
• Trim Removal Wedge (3409)
Removing
• On vehicle with a 2.0L TFSI-, 2.0L TDI- and 3.2L FSI engine, the front of the selector lever cable is accessible from the engine compartment. The circlip can be removed from the side.
• On the 3.0L TDI engine, the front end of the selector cable lever is accessible only from underneath. The front exhaust pipe must be removed.
- Press the button the parking brake to lock the electro-mechanical brake.
- Place selector lever in position "D".
- Carefully pry out the selector lever boot on the side using the Trim Removal Wedge (3409) - arrows - and fold it upward.
- Loosen the bolt on the selector lever cable approximately one turn through the opening - arrow - in the shift mechanism using the Socket (T40031).
• Only loosen the clamping screw - do not remove it.
• Clamping screw is only accessible in selector lever position "D".
• Selector lever must remain in position "D" while clamping screw is loose.
- Remove tower brace. Refer to => Suspension, Wheels,
Steering 40 Removal and Installation.
Vehicles with 3.2L FSI engine:
- Remove left front muffler. Refer to => Engine Mechanical 26 Description and Operation.
Vehicles with 3.0L TDI engine:
- Remove front exhaust pipe. Refer to => Engine Mechanical 26 Description and Operation.
All Vehicles
- Press selector lever cable ball socket - 2 - from selector shaft lever using Pry Lever - Rmv Outside Mirror (80 - 200).
- Press the securing clip - 1 - off and remove the selector lever cable from the transmission.
• Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Remove the locking washers - 1 - on the noise insulation - 2 -, where applicable.
- Remove noise insulation - 2 - from the selector mechanism function unit - 4 - and slide it forward over the selector lever cable - 3 -.
- Remove selector lever cable retaining clip - 1 - toward the side.
- Remove selector lever cable - 2 - from the shift mechanism.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
• Tightening specifications. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Assembly Overview ] 0B5A Automatic Transmission.
• Replace the O-ring on the selector lever cable.
• Replace the locking washers on the noise insulation.
• Lightly grease eyelet and ball socket of selector lever cable with Polycarbamide Grease (G 052 142 A2) before installing.
- Insert the O-ring - 1 - on the selector lever cable.
- Slide the selector lever cable - 2 - into the shift mechanism function unit - arrow -.
- Secure the selector lever cable - 2 - using the retaining clip - 3 -.
• Installation position: Angled end of retaining clip - 1 - faces toward shift mechanism.
- Press shift lever - 1 - on the transmission all the way back - arrow - until the parking log engages.
• When parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.
- Press the selector shaft lever forward three detents so the transmission is in the "D" position.
- Check if the selector lever in the vehicle is also in the "D" position.
- Carefully press the selector lever cable ball socket - 2 - in this position onto the selector shaft lever.
• Take care not to bend selector shaft lever when pressing it on; support it if necessary, as otherwise selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted properly.
- Secure the selector lever cable using a retaining clip - 1 -.
• Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting.
- Re-assemble the exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress. Refer to => Engine Mechanical 26 Description and Operation.
- Install tower brace. Refer to => Suspension, Wheels,
Steering 40 Removal and Installation.
