Final Drive, Differential (0B5A Automatic Transmission)
Center Differential Housing, Transmission Installed
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Oil Collecting And Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Counterhold Tool (T10172) with (T10172/5)
• Final Drive Support (T10337)
• Sealant
Removing
- Remove rear noise insulation - 2 -. Refer to => Body Exterior 66 Description and Operation.
Vehicles with single pipe exhaust system:
CAUTION!
The decoupling element in the front exhaust pipe could be damaged.
• Do not bend the decoupling elements in the front exhaust pipe more than 10°.
- Loosen bolts - arrows -, slide the sleeve to the rear and tie up the front exhaust pipe to the body.
Vehicles with dual pipe exhaust system:
CAUTION!
Danger of damaging the flex joint in the front muffler.
• Do not bend the decoupling element in the front muffler more than 10°.
- Loosen sleeve - 1 - and - 2 -, slide it to the rear and tie the front muffler to the body.
All Vehicles
- Remove the bolts - arrows - and the driveshaft heat shield - 1 -, where applicable.
- Remove the bolts that connect the driveshaft to the transmission by counterholding them with the Counterholder (T10172) and (T10172/5).
- Press the driveshaft together with rear final drive; the universal joint is able to slide axially.
- Tie the driveshaft to the vehicle floor.
- Mount Transmission Support (T10337) on the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) and attach it to the bottom of the transmission mount.
- Lift the transmission slightly using the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
CAUTION!
There is the risk of an accident.
• The Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A) may only be used during assembly and must not sit unsupervised under the vehicle.
- Remove tunnel crossmember bolts - arrows -.
- Carefully lower the transmission by dimension - a - using the Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A).
• Dimension - a - = maximum 100 mm.
- Remove nuts - arrow - and the tunnel crossmember.
- Place Used Oil Collection and Extraction Device (V.A.G 1782) under transmission.
- Remove bolts - 1 through 4 - and carefully remove the center differential housing. The transmission oil will leak out while doing this.
CAUTION!
Danger of damaging the center differential.
• Carefully and slowly pull center differential housing off of transmission toward rear. Otherwise the center differential can fall out of the transmission.
• A center differential that has fallen out can no longer be installed. If differential falls out, transmission must be replaced.
If the gear carrier - 1 - remains in the center differential housing, proceed as follows:
CAUTION!
Danger of damaging the sealing surface on the center differential housing.
• Use a hammer to hit the housing on several places.
- Grip the side ridge on the gear carrier - 1 - using a pair of pliers and remove it in the - arrow A -.
- Using a rubber hammer, tap the housing on alternating sides - B arrows -.
Installing
Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following:
• Tightening specification. Refer to => [ Center Differential Housing Assembly Overview ] Final Drive, Differential (0B5A Automatic Transmission).
• Replace the bolts for the center differential housing.
- Clean both housing separating surfaces thoroughly. They must be free of oil and grease.
- Apply seal evenly; sealant.
- Coat the gear carrier surfaces with transmission oil.
- Make sure the spacer sleeve - 2 - and the shim - 1 - are mounted on the output shaft.
- Coat both outer ring surfaces on the gear carrier slightly with transmission oil.
- Insert the gear carrier.
• Installation position: The tab on the gear carrier - arrow A - must fit into the opening in the transmission housing - arrow B -.
- Place center differential - 2 - on the transmission - 1 -.
- Install the compression spring - 3 - into the center differential.
- Attach the plate spring - 5 - and shim(s) - 4 - in the center differential housing - 6 - with a little grease.
• Plate spring installation location: The side rounded on the outside faces the flange shaft.
- Press the center differential housing centrally on until it makes contact with the transmission housing and hold it securely.
- Tighten the center differential housing bolts => [ Tightening specification and sequence, center
differential housing ] Final Drive, Differential (0B5A Automatic Transmission)
- Install tunnel crossmember and tighten it. Refer to => [ Tunnel Crossmember, Transmission Mount and Transmission Support Assembly Overview ] 0B5A Automatic Transmission.
- Tighten the driveshaft on the transmission.
- Refer to=> [ Front Final Drive and Transfer Case, Filling with Transmission Oil after Repair ] Front Final Drive and Transfer Case, Filling with Transmission Oil after Repair.
- Re-assemble the exhaust system and ensure it is not under stress. Refer to => Engine Mechanical 26 Description and Operation.
