Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement (250 mm Axle)

Disassemble Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

2. Remove the rear differential case assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle)Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle).

3. Remove the pinion yoke and the seal. 4. Remove the pinion bearings from the pinion bearings. Refer to Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle).





Note: The ring gear bolts are left handed threads.

5. Loosen the ring gear bolts (1).

6. Using the appropriate tool, tap on the gear bolts (1) until the ring gear (2) is loose.




7. Remove and discard the ring gear bolts (1). DO NOT reuse the ring gear bolts, replace with NEW only.

8. Remove the differential case flange (2).

9. Remove the ring gear (4) from the differential case (3).





Note: Position a piece of wood inside the differential to protect the pinion gear.

10. Using the appropriate tool and a hammer (1), remove the pinion gear from the differential housing.

Assemble Procedure




1. Install the ring gear (4) on the differential case (3).

2. Position the differential flange (2) on the differential case (3).

3. Install the NEW ring gear bolts (1) and tighten by hand.




4. Install the differential case in a soft jawed vise.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

Note: When tightening the ring gear bolts, tighten the bolts in a criss cross pattern.

5. Using the proper size socket and the torque wrench (1), tighten the NEW ring gear bolts to 295 Nm (218 lb ft).

6. Determine and install the selective shim for the pinion gear. Refer to Pinion Depth Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle) Pinion Depth Adjustment (195/218 mm Axle)Pinion Depth Adjustment (250 mm axle) Pinion Depth Adjustment (250 mm axle).

7. Install the drive pinion bearings. Refer to Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Drive Pinion Gear Bearing Replacement (250 mm Axle).

8. Install the drive pinion flange and the NEW pinion oil seal. Refer to Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (250 mm Axle) Drive Pinion Flange/Yoke and/or Oil Seal Replacement (250 mm Axle).

9. Install the rear differential case assembly. Refer to Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (250 mm Axle)Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Case Replacement (195/218 mm Axle).

10. Using the proper axle fluid, fill the rear differential with fluid. Refer to Differential Oil Replacement (195/218 mm Axle) Differential Oil Replacement (195/218 mm Axle)Differential Oil Replacement (250 mm Axle) Differential Oil Replacement (250 mm Axle).
