P0335
2AZ-FXE ENGINE CONTROL: SFI SYSTEM: P0335: Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit
P0335 - Crankshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit
DESCRIPTION
The crankshaft position sensor system consists of a crankshaft position sensor plate and a pickup coil.
The sensor plate has 34 teeth and is installed on the crankshaft. The pickup coil is made of wound copper wire, an iron core and magnet. The sensor plate rotates and, as each tooth passes by the pickup coil, a pulse signal is created. The pickup coil generates 34 signals per engine revolution. Based on these signals, the hybrid vehicle control ECU calculates the crankshaft position and engine speed. Using these calculations, the fuel injection time and ignition timing are controlled.
- Reference: Inspection using an oscilloscope.
HINT
- The correct waveform is as shown in the illustration.
- G2+ is camshaft position sensor signals, and NE+ is the crankshaft position sensor signal.
- A failure of the ground for the shielding of the wiring may result in noisy waveforms.
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
If there is no signal from the crankshaft position sensor despite the engine operating, the hybrid vehicle control ECU interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
If the malfunction is not repaired successfully, a DTC is set 10 seconds after the engine is next started.

4. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
5. Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on [A].
6. Put the engine in inspection mode Component Tests and General Diagnostics.
7. Start the engine.
8. Idle the engine for 20 seconds or more [B].
9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
10. Read the DTC [C].
HINT
- If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
- If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
12. Input the DTC: P0335.
13. Check the DTC judgment result.
HINT
If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform steps [B] through [C] again.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT
- If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical systems.
- Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked using the Techstream. To check, follow the operation below:
(1) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(2) Turn the power switch on (IG) and turn the Techstream on.
(3) Put the engine in inspection mode Component Tests and General Diagnostics.
(4) Start the engine.
(5) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed.
* The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine rotating normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The hybrid vehicle control ECU records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
PROCEDURE
1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (ENGINE SPEED)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the power switch on (IG).
(c) Turn the Techstream on.
(d) Put the engine in inspection mode Component Tests and General Diagnostics.
(e) Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed.
(f) Start the engine.
(g) Read the values displayed on the Techstream while the engine is running.
OK:
Correct values are displayed.
HINT
- To check the engine speed change, display the graph on the Techstream.
- If the engine does not start, check the engine speed while cranking.
- If the engine speed indicated on the Techstream remains at zero (0), there may be an open or short in the crankshaft position sensor circuit.
