Pinpoint Test V: Intermittent No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, One Or More Modules Are Not Responding During Network Test

Normal Operation

The High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable, circuits VDB04 (WH/BU) and VDB05 (WH). In the event that 1 of the 2 network circuits (HS-CAN + or HS-CAN -) becomes open to a module on the network, unreliable network communication to all modules on the network may result.

The following modules communicate with the scan tool using the HS-CAN:
- 4X4 control module
- ABS module
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM)
- Cruise-Control Module (C-CM)
- Headlamp Control Module (HCM)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
- Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM)
- PCM
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module
- Restraints Control Module (RCM)

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors



PINPOINT TEST V: INTERMITTENT NO HS-CAN COMMUNICATION, ONE OR MORE MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING DURING NETWORK TEST

NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Inspection and Verification

NOTE: Various network DTCs will set while disabling modules in this test procedure which will need to be cleared after the diagnostic procedure is completed.

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery.

V1 CHECK THE DLC PINS FOR DAMAGE


- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the scan tool cable from the DLC.
- Inspect DLC pins 6 and 14 for damage.




- Are DLC pins 6 and 14 OK?

Yes
GO to V2.

No
REPAIR the DLC as necessary. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

V2 CHECK THE HS-CAN TERMINATION RESISTANCE


- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Negative Battery Cable.
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side.




- Is the resistance between 54 and 66 ohms?

Yes
GO to V3.

No
Go To Pinpoint Test W. Pinpoint Test W: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

V3 CHECK THE HS-CAN (+) AND HS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND


- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
GO to V4.

No
Go To Pinpoint Test W. Pinpoint Test W: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

V4 CHECK THE HS-CAN (+) AND HS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE


- Connect the battery ground cable.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DLC C251-6, circuit VDB04 (WH/BU), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-14, circuit VDB05 (WH), harness side and ground.




- Is the voltage greater than 6 volts?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

No
GO to V5.

V5 CHECK FOR RESTORED COMMUNICATION WITH THE PCM DISABLED


- Disconnect: Battery Junction Box (BJB) Fuses 23 (7.5A) and 47 (15A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. Go To Pinpoint Test A. Pinpoint Test A: The PCM Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuses. If the vehicle is equipped with an Headlamp Control Module (HCM), GO to V6.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a HCM, GO to V7.

V6 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE HCM DISABLED


- Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) Fuse 33 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test F. Pinpoint Test F: The Headlamp Control Module (HCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to V7.

V7 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE ABS MODULE DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 34 (5A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test B. Pinpoint Test B: The ABS Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. If the vehicle is equipped with a 4X4 control module, GO to V8.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a 4X4 control module, GO to V9.

V8 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE 4X4 CONTROL MODULE DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuses 11 (10A) and 35 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. Go To Pinpoint Test H. Pinpoint Test H: The 4X4 Control Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuses. GO to V9.

V9 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RCM DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 32 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test D. Pinpoint Test D: The Restraints Control Module (RCM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. If the vehicle is equipped with an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM), GO to V10.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an APIM, GO to V11.

V10 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE APIM DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 14 (10A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test U. Pinpoint Test U: The Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to V11.

V11 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE OCSM DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 46 (7.5A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test E. Pinpoint Test E: The Occupant Classification System Module (OCSM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. If the vehicle is equipped with a Cruise-Control Module (C-CM), GO to V12.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a C-CM, GO to V13.

V12 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE C-CM DISABLED


- Disconnect: BJB Fuse 13 (15A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test G. Pinpoint Test G: The Cruise-Control Module (C-CM) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. GO to V13.

V13 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE IPC DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuses 26 (10A) and 29 (5A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuses. Go To Pinpoint Test C. Pinpoint Test C: The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuses. If the vehicle is equipped with a RFA module, GO to V14.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a RFA module, an intermittent fault is not present. Go To Pinpoint Test W. Pinpoint Test W: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

V14 CHECK FOR RESTORED NETWORK COMMUNICATION WITH THE RFA MODULE DISABLED


- Disconnect: SJB Fuse 27 (20A).
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Network Test.
- Repeat the network test.
- Do all other HS-CAN modules pass the network test?

Yes
INSTALL the removed fuse. Go To Pinpoint Test T. Pinpoint Test T: The Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module Does Not Respond To The Scan Tool

No
INSTALL the removed fuse. An intermittent fault is not present. Go To Pinpoint Test W. Pinpoint Test W: No High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding
