Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks
Address Word 01: "Engine Electronics", Selecting
Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required
- VAG 1551 Scan Tool
NOTE: The VAG 1552 Scan Tool can be used instead of the VAG 1557, however; the VAG 1552 does NOT have a printer.
- VAG1551/3 A adaptor wire
Test Conditions
- Battery voltage must be 11.5 Volts minimum
- Fuse 12 OK.
- Ground connections on engine and transmission OK.
Work Sequence
- Connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool with cable VAG 1551/3.
After Scan Tool has been connected:
- Depending upon desired function:
Switch ON ignition
or
Start engine See Page 01-6, Table "Selectable functions". On Board Diagnostic Technical Data
NOTES:
- If display does not appear as described in work sequence: See Scan Tool operating instructions.
- If due to an input malfunction "malfunction in data transfer!" is displayed, pull wire off Scan Tool reconnect and repeat work step.

- Operate Scan Tool taking displayed values into account:
- Press 1 button to select "Rapid data transfer" mode.
- Press 0 and 1 buttons to select Address word 01: "Engine electronics"
- Press Q button to enter input
VAG 1551 Scan Tool will display Control Module identification e.g.:

Coading 00002 WSC00000
- 038906018Q = Part No. of the Control Module (see parts catalog for up-to-date Control Module versions)
- 1.9 ltr. = Engine capacity
- R4 = Type of engine 14 Cyl. in-line engine)
- EDC = Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
- G = Equipped with GRA (Cruise Control)
- SG = Manual transmission
AG = Automatic transmission
- 1617 = Control Module software version
- Coding 00002 coding variant
- WSC xxxxx = Workshop code from VAG 1551 of the workshop that last carried out coding. (If factory coding has not been changed, WSC 00000 appears)
