Shift Mechanism
Removing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Allocate the grease, refer to the parts catalog.
- First check whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain the anti-theft code.
- Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) cable with the ignition turned off.
- Remove the shift knob, boot and noise insulation. Refer to one of the following:
Eos, GTI through 2009, Golf/GTI from 2010, refer to => [ Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation ] Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation.
- Remove the center console.
- If present, remove the interior monitoring sensor (G273) from the rear nuts.
- Remove the selector housing and center console mounting bracket nuts - arrows -.
- Remove the entire air filter housing, if it is located over the shift mechanism. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engine.
Gas engine.
- Remove the shift cable lock washer - 3 - from the transmission selector lever - 1 -.
- Remove the shift cable from the pin - arrow -.
Metal Relay Lever
- Remove the retaining washer - 4 - for the selector cable from the relay lever - 2 -.
- Remove the selector cable from the pin - arrow -.
Plastic Relay Lever
Disconnecting the Cable Retainer from the Selector Cable
• To avoid damage to the selector cable, the cable retainer must be disconnected from the selector lever before removal.
- Pull the securing mechanism forward as far as the stop in the direction of - arrow 1 - and then unlock to the left in the direction of - arrow 2 -.
- Then press the relay lever forward (- direction of arrow 3 -).
- Remove the relay lever with the cable retainer. Refer to => [ Plastic Relay Lever
from 03.07 ] Description and Operation.
Continuation for All Shift Mechanisms
The cable mounting bracket is secured with either two bolts and a nut - arrows -,
or with three bolts - arrows -.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the crossmember. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engine.
Gas engine.
- Remove the floor panel trim.
- Disconnect the front exhaust pipe at the double clamp and remove it from the subframe. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engine.
Gas engine.
- Disengage the rear exhaust system and remove the heat shield. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engine.
Gas engine.
- Pivot the shift housing downward and remove it with the cables.
Installing
Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:
- Align the shift housing parallel to body.
• Distance to the body must be the same on both sides.
Tightening specifications for the shift housing nuts, refer to - item 26 -=> [ Nut ] Shift Mechanism Overview or - item 16 -=> [ Nut ] Shift Mechanism Overview.
- Route the cables - 1 - from the shift mechanism - 2 - to the transmission as follows:
• The cables must run parallel to each other and must not intersect.
• The cables must be routed in the provided recesses in the heat shield - 3 -.
• The enlargement shows the heat shield from above.
A clip - A - holds the cables and heat shield to each other in place.
The holes in the cable retainers have various diameters.
Allocation of cable retainers, refer to => [ Allocation of Cable
Retainers ] Shift Mechanism Overview.
- Apply a small amount of grease on the pins - arrows - on the transmission shift lever - 1 - and on the relay lever - 2 -.
• Allocate the grease, refer to the parts catalog.
- Replace the lock washer - 3 - and, with the metal relay lever, the retaining washer - 4 - after each disassembly.
- Secure the shift cable with the lock washer - 3 - and selector cable with the retaining washer - 4 -.
Cable Retainer with Plastic Relay Lever
- The relay lever and cable retainer must be installed together. Refer to => [ Plastic Relay Lever
from 03.07 ] Description and Operation.
- Insert the selector cable in the cable retainer.
Continuation for All Shift Mechanisms
- If present, position the interior monitoring sensor on the rear nuts.
- Install the angled mounting bracket for the center console and install the center console.
- Install the shift knob with boot and noise insulation. Refer to one of the following
Eos, GTI through 2009, Golf/GTI from 2010, refer to => [ Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation ] Shift Knob, Boot and Noise Insulation.
- Install the floor panel trim.
- Install the exhaust system free of tension and install the crossmember. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engine.
Gas engine.
Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
- If removed, install the entire air filter housing. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engine.
Gas engine.
- Observe the work procedures after connecting the battery.
