Timing Mechanism Drive Chain
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Old oil collecting and extracting device (VAG 1782)
• Securing pin (T40071)
Removing
- Remove engine. Refer to --> [ Engine, Removing ] Engine Removing.
- Separate engine and transmission. Refer to --> [ Separating transmission from engine ] Engine Removing.
- Secure engine on the engine and transmission holder (VAS 6095). refer to --> [ Engine, Securing on Engine and Transmission Holder ] Engine, Securing on Engine and Transmission Holder.
- Remove drive plate. Refer to --> [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Remove the cylinder head cover: Left, refer to --> [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover and right, refer to --> [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Remove left and right timing chain covers. Refer to --> [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Remove intake manifold. Refer to --> [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.
- Remove oil filter housing. Refer to --> [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Remove lower timing chain cover. Refer to --> [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Remove camshaft timing chains. Refer to --> [ Camshaft Timing Chain Tensioner ] Service and Repair.
- Remove power take off drive chain. Refer to --> [ Power Take Off Drive Chain ] Power Take Off Drive Chain.
- Push drive chain tensioner guide rail in - direction of arrow - and secure chain tensioner using locking pin (T40071).
- Mark drive chain running direction with paint.
- Remove bolts - 1 - and remove guide rail.
- Remove bolts - 2 through 4 - and remove chain tensioner.
- Remove timing mechanism drive chain.
Installing
Installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:
• Replace bolts which have been tightened to specification.
- Route timing mechanism drive chain according to marks applied to drive chain sprockets during removal.
- Install guide rail and tighten bolts - 1 -.
- Install chain tensioner and tighten bolts - 2 -.
- Press drive chain tensioner guide rail in - direction of arrow - and remove locking pin (T40071) from chain tensioner.
- Install power take off drive chain. Refer to --> [ Power Take Off Drive Chain ] Power Take Off Drive Chain.
- Install camshaft timing chains. Refer to --> [ Installing ] Service and Repair.
- Install lower timing chain cover. Refer to --> [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.
- Install crankshaft seal, timing chain side. Refer to --> [ Crankshaft Seal, Timing Chain Side ] Service and Repair.
- Install oil filter housing. Refer to --> [ Oil Filter Housing ] Oil Filter Housing.
- Install intake manifold. Refer to --> [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.
- Install left and right timing chain covers. Refer to --> [ Left and Right Timing Chain Covers ] Left and Right Timing Chain Covers.
- Install cylinder head cover: Left, refer to --> [ Left Cylinder Head Cover ] Left Cylinder Head Cover and right, refer to --> [ Right Cylinder Head Cover ] Right Cylinder Head Cover.
- Install drive plate. Refer to --> [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Install engine. Refer to --> [ Engine, Installing ] Engine Installing
- Add engine oil and check oil level. Refer to --> [ Oil Level, Inspection ] Testing and Inspection.
