Oil Pan: Service and Repair

Oil Pan

Removing

- Disconnect the negative battery cable.






- Remove the engine oil level indicator tube bracket bolt (1) and remove the indicator tube.

- Remove the exhaust cross under pipe. Refer to => [ Exhaust Cross under Pipe ] Exhaust Cross under Pipe.

- Remove the left exhaust manifold. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold ] Left Exhaust Manifold.






• It is not necessary to evacuate the refrigerant from the air conditioning system to perform this procedure.

- Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector from the A/C compressor.

- Remove the A/C compressor upper bolt (3).

- Remove the A/C compressor lower nuts (3).

- Remove the A/C compressor (1) from the studs and reposition using a suitable retaining strap.

- Remove the A/C compressor bracket bolts and bracket.






- Remove the torque converter dust shield bolt (3) and shield (2).

- Remove the oil cooler. Refer to => [ Oil Cooler ] Service and Repair.






- Drain the engine oil.

• A small amount of oil will remain in the oil pan. Use care when removing the oil pan from the engine.

- Remove the oil pan bolts/nuts and oil pan.

- Remove the oil pan gasket.

Installing






- Clean the oil pan and gasket mating surfaces.

- Apply a 1/8 inch bead of Volkswagen genuine parts engine RTV GEN II sealant at the parting line of the oil pump housing and the rear seal retainer.

- Install the oil pan gasket to the engine block.

- Position the oil pan and install the oil pan bolts/nuts finger tight.






- Tighten the oil pan bolts/nuts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).






- Install the torque converter dust shield (2) and bolt (3). Tighten the bolt to 10 Nm (89 in lbs).

- Install the A/C compressor bracket and bolts. Tighten bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft lbs).






- Position and install the A/C compressor (1) to the studs.

- Install the A/C compressor lower nuts (3). Tighten nuts to 23 Nm (17 ft lbs).

- Install the A/C compressor upper bolt (2). Tighten the bolts to 23 Nm (17 ft lbs).

- Connect the wiring harness electrical connector to the A/C compressor.

- Install the left exhaust manifold. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold ] Left Exhaust Manifold.

- Install the exhaust cross under pipe. Refer to => [ Exhaust Cross under Pipe ] Exhaust Cross under Pipe.






- Install the indicator tube and indicator tube bracket bolt (1).

- Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil and to the correct level.

- Connect the negative battery cable.

- Start the engine and check for leaks.
