Camshaft Sprocket
Camshaft Sprocket
Removing
This engine is not a freewheeling design. Therefore, care should be taken not to rotate the camshafts or crankshaft with the timing belt removed.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to => [ Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to=> [ Front Timing Belt Cover ] Front Timing Belt Cover.
- Position the crankshaft sprocket (10) timing mark to the top dead center mark (9) on the oil pump housing by turning the crankshaft in the clockwise direction.
- Remove the cylinder number 1 spark plug. Refer to => [ Spark Plug ] Service and Repair.
- Install a dial indicator in number 1 cylinder in order to check TDC of the piston. Rotate the crankshaft until the piston is at exactly TDC.
The right camshaft must be pushed rearward approximately 3 1/2 inches in order to remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket. Care must be taken not to scratch or nick the camshaft or cylinder head journals when moving the camshaft.
- Remove the right camshaft thrust plate bolts (2), plate (1) and seal (3).
- Remove the right camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Right Camshaft Cover ] Right Camshaft Cover.
- Remove the right rocker arms and shaft. Refer to => [ Rocker Arm and Shaft ] Removal and Replacement.
- Remove the timing belt and tensioner. Refer to => [ Timing Belt ] Timing Belt.
Left Camshaft Sprocket
Right Camshaft Sprocket
- Hold the camshaft sprocket with a 36 mm (1 7/16 in.) box end wrench.
- Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt.
- Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer. The right bolt is 213 mm (8 3/8 in.) long and the left bolt is 255 mm (10.0 in.) long.
• The camshaft sprockets are keyed to the camshaft.
- Remove the camshaft sprocket. For the right side, push the camshaft out of the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches in order to remove the camshaft sprocket.
Installing
The camshaft sprockets are keyed and are not interchangeable from side to side because of the camshaft position sensor pickup.
• The 255 mm (10 in.) bolt is to be used for the left camshaft sprocket and the 213 mm (8 3/8 in.) bolt is to be used for the right camshaft sprocket.
- Install the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft. Install a new sprocket bolt. Do not tighten the bolts at this time. The camshaft sprocket marks should be aligned with the marks on the rear timing belt cover at both sprockets.
- Position the right camshaft thrust plate (1) and new seal (3) to the rear of the cylinder head.
- Install the right camshaft thrust plate bolts (2). Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).
- Using a dial indicator, ensure that the number 1 piston is still at TDC.
- Install the timing belt and tensioner. Refer to => [ Timing Belt ] Timing Belt.
- Hold the camshaft sprocket bolt with a 36 mm (1 7/16 in.) box end wrench.
- Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt to 102 Nm (75 ft lbs) +90 degree additional turn.
- Remove the dial indicator and install spark plug. Refer to => [ Spark Plug ] Service and Repair.
- Install the right rocker arms and shaft. Refer to => [ Rocker Arm and Shaft ] Removal and Replacement.
- Install the right camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Right Camshaft Cover ] Right Camshaft Cover.
- Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to=> [ Front Timing Belt Cover ] Front Timing Belt Cover.
