Engine Oil Pressure: Testing and Inspection
Oil Pressure Switch and Oil Pressure, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Oil Pressure Gauge (V.A.G 1342)
• Voltage Tester (V.A.G 1527 B)
• Test Adapter Kit (V.A.G 1594 A)
• Functional test and servicing the optical and acoustic oil pressure indicator, refer to
Conditions
• Engine oil temperature min. 80 °C (176 °F).
• The engine oil level is OK.
Sequence
- Remove the oil pressure switch. Refer to one of the following:
=> [ Oil Pressure Switch ] Oil Pressure Switch
=> [ Reduced Oil Pressure Switch ] Reduced Oil Pressure Switch
- Install the (V.A.G 1342) into the hole for the oil pressure switch.
- Install the oil pressure switch - 2 - into the (V.A.G 1342).
- Connect the brown wire - 1 - from the (V.A.G 1342) to ground (GND).
- Connect the (V.A.G 1527 B) to the oil pressure switch and the battery positive terminal using adapter cables from the (V.A.G 1594 C).
• Light Emitting Diode (LED) must not light up.
If LED lights up:
- Replace the oil pressure switch.
- Start the engine.
• While starting engine, watch the (V.A.G 1342) and the LED as the oil pressure switch may open during starting.
• At 0.7 to 1.1 bar pressure, the LED must light up.
If LED does not light up:
- Replace the oil pressure switch.
Oil Pressure, Checking
- Start the engine.
• Oil pressure at idle: at least 1.8 bar
• Oil pressure at 2000 RPM: at least 4.0 bar
If the target values are not reached: the pressure relief valve or oil pump is malfunctioning.
- Replace the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Oil Pump.
