- Push the camshaft out through the back of the cylinder head approximately 3.5 inches and remove the camshaft sprocket.

- Remove the rear timing belt cover to cylinder head bolts.

- Remove the cylinder head bolts (1 through 8) in the reverse order of the tightening sequence.

- Remove the cylinder head.

- Clean and inspect all mating surfaces.

Installing

The cylinder head bolts are tightened using a torque angle procedure. The bolts must be examined before reuse. If the threads are stretched (2) the bolts must be replaced.

Stretching (2) can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale the bolt must be replaced.

When cleaning the cylinder head and block sealing surfaces, Do not use a metal gasket scraper because the surfaces could be cut or ground. Use only a wooden or plastic scraper.

- Clean the sealing surfaces of the cylinder head and block.

The cylinder head gaskets are not interchangeable between cylinder heads and are clearly marked right or left.

Ensure that the correct head gaskets are used and are oriented correctly on the cylinder block.

- Place the new cylinder head gasket over the locating dowels. Ensure that the gasket is installed on the correct side of the engine.

Before installing the cylinder head bolts, lubricate the threads with clean engine oil.

- Insert the front four cylinder head bolts into the cylinder head. Pull the bolts up to the top of their travel and retain with rubber bands (3).

- Install the cylinder head over the locating dowels and tighten the bolts until snug.

- Tighten the cylinder head bolts according to the following, in the sequence shown (1 through 8) to the following specifications:

Tighten the bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft lbs).

Tighten the bolts to 88 Nm (65 ft lbs).

Tighten the bolts again to 88 Nm (65 ft lbs).

Tighten the bolts and additional 90 degree turn Do not use a torque wrench for this step.

- The bolt torque after the 90 degree turn should be over 122 Nm (90 ft lbs). If not, replace the bolt.

- Install the rear timing cover to cylinder head bolts. Tighten the bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft lbs).

- Install the camshaft sprocket. Counterhold the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt to 102 Nm (75 ft lbs) + 90 degree additional turn.

- Position the camshaft thrust plate (1) and new seal (3) to the rear of the cylinder head.

- Install the camshaft thrust plate bolts (2). Tighten the bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).

- Rotate the camshaft sprocket to its alignment mark and check the right camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing alignment marks.

- Install the timing belt and tensioner. Refer to => [ Timing Belt ] Timing Belt.

- Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to => [ Front Timing Belt Cover ] Front Timing Belt Cover.

- Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold ] Left Exhaust Manifold.

- Install the rocker arms. Refer to => [ Rocker Arm and Shaft ] Removal and Replacement.

- Install the camshaft cover. Refer to => [ Left Camshaft Cover ] Left Camshaft Cover.

- Position the cylinder head ground strap and install the bolt.

- Install lower intake manifold. Refer to => [ Lower Intake Manifold ] Lower Intake Manifold.
