Glow Plug: Service and Repair






Glow Plugs

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Socket Insert AF 12 for Glow Plugs 4-Cyl.TDI CR (VAS 6454)

Pliers (3314)

Removing

- Turn off the ignition.

- Remove the engine cover. Refer to => [ Engine Cover ] Engine Cover.

Be careful not to damage the wire connection when removing the glow plug connector otherwise the entire wiring harness will have to be replaced.

When gripping the glow plug with the pliers (3314) , be careful not to grip too hard as the support sleeve may become damaged.

- Open the retaining clips - arrows - from the wiring harness.






- Position the pliers (3314) with the groove - arrow A - on the collar of the protective sleeve - arrow B -.






- Disconnect the glow plug connectors from the glow plugs.

- Clean the glow plug bore in the cylinder head.

Contaminates must not fall into the cylinder.

Example for cleaning:

Extract large contaminants with a vacuum cleaner.

Spray brake clean or a suitable cleaner into the glow plug bore, let it work and then use compressed air to remove it.

Then clean the glow plug bore with a cloth dampened with oil.

- Use the socket insert AF 12 for glow plugs 4-cyl.TDI CR (VAS 6454) to loosen the glow plug.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:

- Reconnect the glow plug connector - 1 - to the glow plug - arrow -.






Make sure the glow plug connectors are tight.
