Left or Right Upper Timing Chain Cover

Sealant, refer to the Parts Catalog

Removing

During installation, all cable ties must be installed at the same location.

The sealant for the cover is very strong. Pry off the cover very slowly and evenly so that it does not bend.

- Remove the engine compartment cover. Refer to => [ Engine Compartment Cover ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the rear engine cover - 2 - upward.






- Remove the affected Secondary Air Injection (AIR) combination valve, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Left ] Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Left.

=> [ Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Right ] Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Right.

Left Cover:






- Remove the bolts - 1 through 8 - and the brackets - arrows A and B -.

- Carefully remove the left timing chain cover.

Right Cover:






- Remove the nuts - arrows - and move the bracket - 1 - and wiring harness to the side.

- Remove the bolts - 1 through 8 -.






- Carefully remove the right timing chain cover.

Installing

For tightening specifications, refer to the following:

Replace the O-rings.

Risk of contaminating the lubricating system.

Cover open parts of the engine.

- Remove any old sealant from the sealing surfaces.

Risk of eye injury.

Wear protective eyewear.

- Remove the sealant residue from the timing chain cover, cylinder block and cylinder head, using for example, a rotating plastic brush.






- Clean the sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.

Be sure to check the expiration date of the sealant.






- Cut the sealant tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter approximately 2 mm).






The lubrication system could be plugged with excess sealant.

Do not apply the sealant bead thicker than indicated.

- Apply the sealant bead - arrow - to the clean sealing surfaces on the timing chain cover as shown in the illustration.

Thickness of sealant bead: 2.5 mm

The timing chain cover must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the sealant

- Position the left timing chain cover and tighten the bolts, refer to => [ Left Timing Chain Cover Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification ] Timing Chain Covers Overview.






- Position the right timing chain cover and tighten the bolts, refer to => [ Right Timing Chain Cover Bolt Tightening Sequence and Specification ] Timing Chain Covers Overview.






Further installation is performed in reverse order of removal, noting the following:

- Install the AIR combination valve, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Left ] Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Left.

=> [ Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Right ] Secondary Air Injection Combination Valve, Right.
