Removal and Replacement






Oil Pump

Removing

It is necessary to remove the oil pump body to service the oil pump rotors.

- Drain the cooling system. Refer to => [ Cooling System Draining and Filling ] Cooling System Draining and Filling.

- Remove the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to => [ Crankshaft Sprocket ] Crankshaft Sprocket.

- Remove the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the oil pickup tube bolts and tube.

- Remove the oil pump bolts, pump and gasket.

- Disassemble the oil pump if required. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Overhaul.

- Clean and inspect the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump Cleaning and Inspection ] Testing and Inspection.

Installing

Thoroughly clean all bolt threads and threaded area in the engine, removing all oil residue, before reassembly.

- Assemble the oil pump if required. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Overhaul.

- Prime the oil pump before installation by filling the rotor cavity with clean engine oil.

- Install the oil pump and gasket carefully over the crankshaft and position the pump against the engine block.

Do not apply the thread sealant to the underside of the bolt head.

- Apply Volkswagen genuine parts Thread sealant as directed on the package to the oil pump cover bolts where indicated. The sealant must be applied from the tip to approximately 10 mm of the thread length.

- Tighten oil pump bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).

- Install a new O-ring seal onto the oil pickup tube.

- Install the oil pickup tube and bolt. Tighten the bolt to 28 Nm (21 ft lbs).

- Install the oil pan. Refer to => [ Oil Pan ] Service and Repair.

- Install the crankshaft sprocket. Refer to=> [ Crankshaft Sprocket ] Crankshaft Sprocket.

- Fill the cooling system. Refer to => [ Cooling System Draining and Filling ] Cooling System Draining and Filling.

- Fill the engine crankcase with the proper oil and to the correct level.
