Oil Pump and Balance Shaft Drive Chain

Oil Pump and Balance Shaft Drive Chain

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Key (T40049)

Locking Pin (T40069)

Locking Pin (T40071)

Locating Pins (T40116)

Requirements:

The engine is removed. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.

The engine and electro-drive drive motor are separated. Refer to => [ Electro-Drive Drive Motor and Transmission, Separating from and Installing to Engine ] Electro-Drive Drive Motor and Transmission, Separating from and Installing to Engine.

Removing

- Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

Danger of damaging the drive chain because the bolt thread is too long.

Use bolts with a 22 mm maximum thread length - a - to attach the key (T40049).

If only longer bolts are available, then the bolt head must be installed in such a way so that thread length is still only 22 mm.

- Install the key (T40049) with 2 bolt - arrows - to the back of the crankshaft.

- Remove the plug - arrow - from the cylinder block.

- Rotate the crankshaft in engine rotation direction - arrow - to Top Dead Center (TDC) using the socket (T40058) and a box end wrench.

The notch - A - has to match up with the joint - arrow -.

- Install the locking pin (T40069) in the hole and tighten it to 20 Nm. Rotate the crankshaft - 1 - back and forth slightly to completely center the pin, if necessary.

- Press the chain tensioner guide rail in the - direction of the arrow - and secure the chain tensioner using a locking pin (T40071).

Risk of destroying due to a reversed running direction of a used drive chain.

Mark the drive chain running direction with painted arrows for reinstallation later. Do not mark the drive chain with a punch, notch or something similar.

- Remove the bolts - 3 - and the balance shaft sprocket.

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - and the chain tensioner with the chain.

Installing

For the correct tightening specifications, refer to => [ Oil Pump and Balance Shaft Drive Chain Overview ] Oil Pump and Balance Shaft Drive Chain Overview.

Secure the crankshaft - 1 - in the TDC position using the locking pin (T40069).

Replace the bolts which have been tightened to an additional torque angle.

- Install the chain tensioner together with the chain and the balance shaft sprocket.

- Lock the balance shaft in the TDC position using the locating pin (T40116).

The slots in the balance shaft sprocket must be at the middle position in relation to the threaded holes in the balance shaft. If necessary, adjust the chain by one tooth.

- Tighten the chain tensioner bolts.

- Install the sprocket bolts - 1 - loosely.

It must still be possible to rotate the sprocket on the balance shaft and it must not tilt.

- Remove the locking pin (T40071) to release the chain tensioner.

- Press against the chain tensioner guide rail - arrow - with a screwdriver and simultaneously tighten the bolts - 1 - for the sprocket.

- Remove the locating pin (T40116) from the balance shaft.

Further installation is carried out in the reverse order while noting the following:

- Install the lower timing chain cover. Refer to => [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] Lower Timing Chain Cover.

- Install the plug for TDC locating, refer to => [ Top Dead Center (TDC) Plug ] Service and Repair.
