Shift Cable: Testing and Inspection
Selector Lever Cable, Bringing into Basic Setting
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
Procedure
• "Guided Fault Finding" using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) is complete. All malfunctions have been corrected.
- Select the following menu items on the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) in the "Function/component selection" of Guided Fault Finding.
• "Powertrain"
• "0B5 transmission"
• "01-OBD capable systems"
• "02 - Transmission Electronics"
• "02-Transmission electronics, functions"
• "02-Read measured value block"
- Select the measured value "Gear" from the list on the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B).
- Compare the following displays:
• "Gear" measured value on the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
• Selector lever position
• Selector Lever Transmission Range Position Display Unit (Y26) on the shift mechanism
• Transmission Range Display (Y6) in the instrument cluster
Conditions:
• The displays must match
If the displays do not match:
- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting.
If the individual displays cannot be reached by adjusting the selector lever cable:
Selector lever cable, bringing into basic setting:
• Tightening specifications. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Assembly Overview ] 0B5A Automatic Transmission.
- Remove selector lever cable for selector shaft lever. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable ] 0B5A Automatic Transmission.
• Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.
- Press the shift lever - 1 - on the transmission all the way back - arrow - until the parking log engages.
• When the parking lock is engaged, it must not be possible to turn both front wheels in one direction at the same time.
- Press the selector shaft lever forward three detents so the transmission is in the "D" position.
- Check if the selector lever in the vehicle is also in the "D" position.
- Select the "Read measured value block" function on the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) in "02 - Transmission electronics" Guided Fault Finding.
- Select "Gear measured value" on the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
- Compare the following displays:
• "Gear measured value" on the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
• Selector lever position
• Selector Lever Transmission Range Position Display Unit (Y26) on the shift mechanism
• Transmission range display (Y6) in the instrument cluster
Conditions:
• The displays must match
- Carefully press the selector lever cable ball socket - 2 - in this position onto the selector shaft lever.
• Take care not to bend selector shaft lever when pressing it on; support it if necessary, as otherwise selector mechanism can no longer be adjusted properly.
• Disregard - 1 -.
- Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting ] Selector Lever Cable, Adjusting.
- Check shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Component Tests and General Diagnostics.
