Cylinder Head
Cylinder Head
Intake manifold gasket is made of a very thin metal and may cause personal injury, handle with care.
Removing
- Drain the cooling system. Refer to => [ Cooling System Draining and Filling ] Cooling System Draining and Filling.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to => [ Upper Intake Manifold ] Upper Intake Manifold.
- Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to => [ Lower Intake Manifold ] Lower Intake Manifold.
- Remove the rocker arm covers. Refer to => [ Rocker Arm Cover, Left ] Rocker Arm Cover, Left , and/or => [ Rocker Arm Cover, Right ] Rocker Arm Cover, Right.
- Remove the exhaust manifolds. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold ] Left Exhaust Manifold, and/or => [ Right Exhaust Manifold ] Right Exhaust Manifold.
- Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head.
- Remove the dipstick (1) and tube, if required.
- Remove the rocker arm and shafts. mark the positions in order to ensure installation in original locations.
- Remove the eight cylinder head bolts from the cylinder head and remove the cylinder head.
Installing
- Clean all sealing surfaces of the engine block and cylinder heads.
- Position the new gasket (1) on the engine block. The left bank gasket is identified with the "L" stamped in the exposed area of the gasket located at front of engine. The right bank gasket is identified with a "R" stamped in the exposed area of the gasket also, but is located at the rear of the engine (2).
- The cylinder head bolts should be examined before reuse. If the threads are stretched (2), the bolts must be replaced.
- Stretching can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale (2) the bolt should be replaced.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts 1 through 8 in the following sequence. Tighten according to the following values:
• First step, tighten to 61 Nm (45 ft lbs).
• Second step, tighten to 88 Nm (65 ft lbs).
• Third step, tighten again to 88 Nm (65 ft lbs).
• Final step, tighten an additional 1/4 turn. Do not use a torque wrench for this step.
• The bolt tightening specification after the 1/4 turn should be over 122 Nm (90 ft lbs). If not, replace the bolt.
- Inspect the push rods and replace worn or bent rods.
- Install the push rods.
- Install the rocker arms and shafts. Refer to => [ Rocker Arms and Shaft ] Rocker Arms and Shaft.
- Install the rocker arm covers. Refer to => [ Rocker Arm Cover, Left ] Rocker Arm Cover, Left, and/or => [ Rocker Arm Cover, Right ] Rocker Arm Cover, Right.
- Install the exhaust manifolds. Refer to => [ Left Exhaust Manifold ] Left Exhaust Manifold, and/or => [ Right Exhaust Manifold ] Right Exhaust Manifold.
- Install a new O-ring (3) on the dipstick tube. Install the dipstick (1), if required.
- Install the spark plugs.
- Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to=> [ Lower Intake Manifold ] Lower Intake Manifold.
- Install the upper intake manifold Refer to => [ Upper Intake Manifold ] Upper Intake Manifold.
- Fill the cooling system. Refer to => [ Cooling System Draining and Filling ] Cooling System Draining and Filling.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
